Billy Joe Allen was born in Jacksonville, Texas. He moved with his family as a teen to Lake Jackson, and attended and graduated from Freeport High School in 1946. He served in the United States Navy where he spent time in the South Pacific on the USS O’Bannon DDE 450 as a machinist mate. B.J. later worked in Operations for Dow Chemical until his retirement in 1979. He was married to Joe Anne Charles Allen for 55 years until her death in 2009. B.J. was a lover of animals and nature, and much of his time was spent outside. He and Joe Anne enjoyed Quintana beach in the 1960’s, fishing camps at Harris Reservoir and Danbury and a special retreat at Wadsworth for many years. B.J. was gifted mechanically, and had a talent for building. He was happiest when repairing and giving new life to salvaged items, and was a regular “customer” at the old Dow salvaged materials sales. He was a man of strength and strong convictions.
