About

Vernon C. Wagner Funeral Homes have provided funeral and cremation services since 1954. Our Plainview, New York, location opened in 1985 in response to the growing Hicksville and Plainview communities.

An experienced and professional staff

We believe that the service we provide is only as good as the people providing it. At Vernon C. Wagner Funeral Homes, our experienced and well-trained associates provide sincere compassion and tireless service to each Plainview and Hicksville family whom we serve. Each member of our team is dedicated to upholding the highest standards of our business.

Involved in the Plainview and Hicksville community

Our associates are actively involved in many service organizations and are members of many state and national professional associations. Community involvement helps our associates be aware of and sensitive to the Plainview and Hicksville families we serve. Additionally, it encourages them to provide better service to the community.

To further these aims, our associates attend continuing education classes and seminars in both the funeral home and at locations across the nation. By bettering themselves, our team can better serve those in need and give the support that is so necessary to help families cope with the loss of a loved one.

History

The story of Vernon C. Wagner Funeral Homes begins in the coal mining region of Pennsylvania, where our eponymous founder’s teenage classmate was killed in a motorcycle accident. The poor restoration job on Vernon Wagner’s friend inspired him to do a better job in the business of caregiving.

After serving in the Navy during World War II, Vernon went to American Academy McAllister Institute and became a licensed New York funeral director. In 1954, he and his wife, Alice, purchased the white house on the corner of Old Country Road and Jerusalem Avenue in Hicksville, New York. It was part of the estate of Dr. Shea, but for years it had been a rooming house. Vernon opened the business in August of that year after consolidating with the Mowen Funeral Home, one of the 3 funeral homes in Hicksville.

The business expands

When the funeral home opened in 1954, it performed a mere 15 services in its first year. By 1979—25 years later—the business was performing an astounding 200 services per year. The Hicksville location underwent many renovations, remodels and expansions throughout the years, and in 1985, Vernon’s son, Bill Wagner, opened a 2nd location in Plainview on Old Country Road.

A tradition of compassion and care

Since our founding days more than a half-century ago, we have upheld our philosophy of giving professional service with compassion and care to all those suffering the loss of a loved one. We take pride in the fact that we have maintained that philosophy for more than 60 years and can continue to offer the people of the Hicksville and Plainview area thoughtful and dignified funeral arrangements according to their needs and desires in a modern, spacious and caring environment.
