March 2, 2018 brought to a close 82 years of a life well lived for William Shelby “Bill” Powers, Jr. He was born on June 5, 1935 in Justin, Texas to William Shelby Powers, Sr. and Irma Lorraine Adams Powers. Following his graduation from Northwest High School, Bill spent time serving his country in the United States Navy. Upon his return from service, he wed his beautiful bride, Teresa Jane Pittman on November 10, 1956. In December of 1961, Bill took a job with Justin Boot Company and began a career he was truly passionate about. He truly embodied dedication, both to his work and to his family, and retired after a highly successful 40-year career. When he wasn’t traveling the country as a salesman, he could often be found on family trips with Jane and their four wonderful children, or in the backyard swimming pool with them. He enjoyed his time on the golf course with his buddies, playing pool, having a 5 o’clock cocktail of Chivas and water, and being out in his shop working on the latest creation. He was skilled in woodworking and welding, often making gifts for his loved ones. His cherished, intricate treasures include: cutting boards, toy boxes for the grandkids, cribbage boards, art, treehouses, swing sets and trains; just to name a few! After his retirement, he truly valued his family time and a favorite past time was playing cards; hearts, cribbage and gin were his games of choice. He enjoyed cooking breakfast and was famous for his waffles, “Poppycakes” and mcmuffins. He was a man steeped in tradition, every day at 3:30, he could be found watching Jeopardy and Sundays were for football. Bill was beloved by his family and friends. Words cannot express the impact that he had on those who had the fortune of crossing paths with him.
Bill is survived by his wife, Jane, daughter, Malyn Powers, son, William Shelby Powers, III and his wife Debbie, daughter, Laura Ann Powers and son, Patrick Adam Powers. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Nicole Powers, Cara Ann Powers, Brittany Massengale, Adam Shelby Powers and his wife Alexa, William Shelby Powers, IV, Westlee Powers, and Kallie Jane Powers. He will be deeply missed by his family and his many dear friends. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, March 10, 2018 at 4:00 p.m. at the Oak Tree Country Club. A reception will follow.
