Bessie M. Smith

NORTHPORT - Bessie M. Smith, age 96, of Northport, Ala., passed away May 28, 2018 at Hospice of West Alabama. Services will be 12 noon Wednesday, May 30, 2018, at Mt. Hebron Baptist Church with Jerry Montgomery officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Sunset Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John Samuel and Velma C. Montgomery; brothers, John Samuel, Jr. and James L. Montgomery; and sisters, Mauline Cunningham and Ann Lary.

Survivors include her daughters, Geraldine Mayo, Betty Hunter and Gail Phillips, all of Northport; sister, Myree Galloway of Northport; grandchildren, Brian Phillips, Mindy Sexton and Kevin Mayo; great-grandchildren, Peyton Phillips, Sammie Phillips, Joseph Mayo, Amya Mayo, Noah Mayo, Kinsley Mayo and Brylan Sexton; and step great-granddaughter, Jocelyn Williams.

Pallbearers will be Brian Phillips, Kevin Mayo, Mike Montgomery, Jason Fair, Kevin Sexton, Arnie Lary and Gary Galloway.

Honorary pallbearers are family and friends of the community and caregivers, Clara Smith, Linda Cunningham and Becky Channell.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to West Alabama Hospice and Alabama Hospice.
