Leonard Bornstein

Dr. Leonard Bornstein, 82 of South Orange, NJ, passed away on Tuesday, July 3, 2018 after a 15 year battle with lymphoma. Born in Patterson and raised in Newark, he lived in Maplewood for 46 years before moving to South Orange three years ago. A graduate of West Side High School, he received bachelor and master’s degrees from Newark State College and a Doctorate in Education from Rutgers University.

“Lenny” is remembered by friends and family as an educator, advocate, band leader, world traveler, patron of the arts and extraordinary humanitarian. He was the principal of Collins School, and Harrison School in Livingston, NJ and then served as administrator of pupil personnel services, retiring in 1996. He then became a career in volunteerism, primarily with JESPY House and Arts Unbound, both serving on the Board of Directors, and taking an active role with clients. He received a 2010 Seeds of Hope Award from New Jersey Monthly Magazine for his work with Arts Unbound. In 2011, he wrote and published a children’s book, “No Hop, the Kangaroo Who Thought He Couldn’t”. He also served as a master of ceremonies at more than 2500 Bar and Bat Mitzvah parties during the lengthy career as proprietor of Leonard Bornstein Entertainments.

Dr. Bornstein is survived by his loving wife, Barbara; beloved sons and daughters-in-law: Philip (Christine Andreadis) and Ira (Kelly Tirik); cherished grandchildren: Lindsey, Nicholas and Michael as well as by nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends galore.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:15 pm on Friday, July 6, at Bernheim Apter Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, 68 Old Short Hills Rd., Livingston, NJ. Donations in his memory may be made to Arts Unbound, 554 Freeman St., Orange, NJ 07050
