John was born on March 23, 1940 in Lebanon PA, to Monroe and Ruby (Marks) Smith. He married Joyce Marie Lesher in 1957, and together they raised two sons, Rick and Steven. He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Ann (Wick) Smith.
John was employed by Quaker Alloy for 41 years, from which he retired, and later worked at the Quality Inn, Lebanon, as a maintenance specialist.
From 1965 through 1973, John was well known as “Captain Johnny Smith”, a successful and skilled stock car driver at several raceways in the area. During his racing career, he amassed many race wins and a few track championships at Silver Springs Speedway in Mechanicsburg in 1967 and 1970, and Susquehanna speedway in 1970, (nka BAPS speedway) in York Haven PA. He also raced at Fredericksburg, Port Royal and Williams Grove Speedways during this time. He drove the black and white #49 Oldsmobile hobby stock car, and had several of his brothers and other family members as his pit crew. John was well known for his charisma and his extraordinary mechanical prowess.
John is preceded in death by his father, Monroe, his mother, Ruby, and also by his brothers Lester, William, Daniel, Robert and Donald. He is survived by wife Ann, her children Jeremiah and Danielle, his sons, Rick and Steven, his brothers, James and Carl, and his two sisters, Dorothy and Barbara.
