Our cherished Peggy Freedman, age 69, of Newton, MA, passed away on Sunday, June 9, 2019. Bravely battling cancer for a number of years, Peggy was surrounded by family at the time of her passing. She was the beloved mother of Jessica Freedman and her husband, Marc Haggerty, and loving grandmother to Leela and Kaya Haggerty. Peggy was much loved and is survived by her siblings and their spouses: Joan Silver, Jeffrey and Debby Diamond, and Philip and Claudia Diamond; as well as by her brother–in-law and sister in-law, Arnold Freedman and Lori Kahn; and by Gladys Freedman. Peggy also loved spending time with her nieces and nephews: Adam Silver, Lauren Del Balso, David Diamond, Jay Karol, Jacob Freedman, Shoshana Rosen, Hannah Freedman, Michael Diamond, Tori Diamond, and Zipi Diamond, and also with her grandnieces and grandnephews.
Prior to retirement, Peggy worked as a planner for the Developmental Disabilities Council for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. She was an active and beloved member of Temple Shalom, where she had her bat mitzvah as an adult, participated in diverse learning opportunities, and helped to archive temple records. An avid reader, Peggy also loved puzzles, gardening, taking long walks, traveling with her sister and her temple, exploring Honolulu on visits with her daughter and granddaughters, and most of all, spending time with her family and friends who loved her very much. Peggy’s granddaughter, Leela, remembers that her Grandma loved visiting Leela’s school, Leela’s artwork, flowers, and taking walks in botanical gardens and arboretums. Kaya loved when Grandma played the vegetarian version of “This Little Piggy” with her toes (“this little piggy had tofu…”). Peggy was famous for her delicious pecan pies, candied nuts, homemade apple sauce, and raisin-free haroses.
The family would like to put a memory book together for Peggy's granddaughters. Please bring photos and written reflections to the shiva or to Temple Shalom so that a memory book can be created.
