Dr Sommerville was my eye dr for many year.
He had a good sense of humor and i was always able to have a joke with him

I just received the sad news upon scheduling my appointment.   Dr. Somerville was my Doctor since I was 9 years old.  I’m now 60 and still recall my annual visits with him as if I was still a child.  His professionalism, compassion, dedication, encouragement, guidance, and kind hearted nature will forever be engraved in my soul.  A special human with a sense of humor and warm smile.  I always felt that I was in the best care possible and he was so admirable.  He left a positive impression on me and played a part in my adolescence life and my adulthood.   I’m certain that he played an important role in everyone’s lives that he touched.   I’ll miss you Dr but never forgotten.

Hello.  I am so sad that I have missed extending my warmest thanks to Dr. Somerville for his care for me as a child. I have lived in the States for many years now. Dr. Somerville operated on my eye when I was about 5 and took care of me until I moved to the States as an adult. I am a FNP now with a greater perspective to what it means to care for a patient but as you well know he was THE kindest, smartest and most compassionate doctor EVER.... and I am married to one. He calmed your fears and made coming to his office a fun event.  I remember when he decorated his office with blues and turquoise and how beautiful it was. My office is in those same colors.  Much love and condolences to his family and thank you for the opportunity to share my gratitude. 

I just found out this morning of Dr.Somervilles passing ! I am so sad! I was a longtime patient of his! He was always exceptionally warm, precessional and passionate about his work! My mother, grandmother and myself were all his patients. I’m saddened that my children won’t have the opportunity to be under his care! I was always so impressed with his knowledge of our eyes! For myself, being born with cataracts I couldn’t have had someone better to follow my optometry  needs.

I was one of his patients and always felt very glad to be in his care. He cared wonderfully for my late father whose vision was impaired because of cataracts and a genetic disorder. Others had decided there was nothing to be done, but Dr. Somerville undertook a process of care that was very thoughtful and gave my father reasonable vision for the rest of his life.  I am sure he did similar things for many others.  With thanks. I do know that his memory and presence will be with you for all of your lives as a blessing he gave.

My thoughts are with Jo and family at this sad time.  Despite the inevitability of death for all of us, I was shocked and saddened to hear the that Glasier has left us.  His mother and my father grew up as first cousins and next door neighbours so our families were very close, with frequent visits.  Glasier visited often for Sunday dinner while at Rothesay Collegiate and he and Jo were frequent visitors during their year as interns.  After decades of living far apart it gave me great pleasure to see Glasier and Jo several times in recent years.   He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

My memories are overwhelming of this beautiful man and his family that I have spent so much of my youthful days with. The loving ways of Glacier and Josephine as a beautiful couple that have always welcomed all of their children’s friends into their loving home has placed a special mark on my heart as the man I am today. I can look back upon my memories and remember all of the adventures that I have had at the cottage and my friendship with Lloyd and all of the other siblings. Glacier was always such an inspiration to everyone all around us, all though we didn’t realize it then how much of an inspiration he truly was. Glacier was one of the greatest! I will never forget the day that Lloyd told me to call his dad “Ice Man” it just didn’t register at first but made sense later why his nickname was just that! Glacier was a cool cat, a loving dad, a great mentor, a role model to look up to, some of my best younger memories were with this amazing family and I am incredibly grateful for that. We will all miss you Glacier, may you look over your family with much love for all of eternity. The heavens have received a beautiful soul to add to their collection of Angels.

Dear Jo and the Somerville Family,

My encounters with older cousin Glasier were too few and far between.  He was a gentleman of integrity and love with a gentle spirit that could calm any soul.  Glasier inherited these characteristics from a Father and Mother who modelled them well as I experienced as a young boy in my many visits to their Bristol NB home, hosted graciously by Aunt Helen  and the dental office of Dr Donald Somerville, my jovial Uncle Don.  Yes, Glasier helped me relive these boyhood memories with his wit and charm.  Of course I will never forget the hand-me-down-clothes, etc., that I had the pleasure of wearing as a young boy, including those beaver skin boots.  
Glasier was an inspiration to me as I pursued researching family history, relations and our common heritage.  His laugh was an echo of his father’s laugh that I remember so well in that dental chair from a time that is now long ago.  As I review the lovely condolences herein I realize that we have experienced an ‘Angel’ in our midst.

I want to extend my deep condolences on the passing of Glasier.  He was a wonderful teacher, colleague, and friend as I was starting out my career in Ophthalmology.  His compassion for his patients, colleagues (and I am sure,  family) knew no bounds.  He was very positive, supportive, and it was always a  delight to have a conversation with him. Dr. Somerville was a wonderful man. I lived only a few houses away from the lovely Somerville family on Beardmore Cres. in Toronto. I have very fond memories of that time. Years later Dr. Somerville became my eye physician. Always caring and kind, he was a wonderful doctor. Whenever I would come for my appointments we would catch up on how our families were doing and he would proudly show me his latest photos of his children. He would glow in doing so. When I first met Glasier, he made sure I knew how to spell ophthalmology correctly - very important for a future family physician.  Donald and I lived with Jo and Glasier for several months when I first moved to Canada.  I looked forward to (and dreaded) his booming voice, “Is anybody home?”  at the front door after work every day -  I looked forward to the company, but he often woke the baby I had spent hours trying to get to sleep!  Ruth loved her grandfather, and gave him a new name, “ fa-focker” as she couldn’t say grandfather.  I’m not sure he appreciated that one, but luckily it didn’t stick!  I will remember him for his Caesar salads, his warm dinner plates, his evasive travel plans, and his Costco purchases.  (He always shopped like there were 20 people living in the house, and often there were!) I appreciated his collections, his love of history, and his goading me about American politics!  He truly loved his family, those born a Somerville and those of us who later became Somervilles.  And although I never knew whether to call him Dr. Somerville, Glasier, or just go with Grandfather, he was a truly good man, and a great father-in-law!

Leza and I send condolences to Jo and the family. Glasier always had  time to help a young colleague.  He taught me something in the OR that I have never forgotten. Not only did I find it useful in my work but I have found it  to be a great life lesson:  “When you have good, don’t go for perfect or you might wind up with very bad.” 

Glasier and Jo were always the ultimate and gracious host and hostess.  We were always warmly welcomed in their home and enjoyed our visits to Florida and New Brunswick.

It is difficult to put in words the tremendous loss in our hearts without you.  You were my number #1 Father-in-Law.  So generous, so kind, so thoughtful, so dapper, so intelligent, so proud, so dignified.  We will miss your laugh, your phone calls, Sunday night suppers, the best ceasar salads that I can never replicate.  We will miss your Saturday morning visits for a bagel, peanut butter and reading the Wheels section while Jo was getting her hair done.  We will miss you telling us not to put the knife handles in the dishwater. 
 We will miss you saying, "You wouldn't happen to have a hot plate would you, how do you expect to keep the food warm on a cold plate?"

I don't know how many times I answered the phone and Glasier would call from Florida.  "How is Darla? How is the weather?  I would proceed to say, "It is -30C, expecting 25cm of snow and high winds, Glasier would proceed with his guttural laugh, it is 94F here!!!

Glasier, may your sun shine down upon us because it is raining here.

I have had the honour of having the greatest father-in-law.  He was always kind and caring and loved us all .  I was fortunate to work with him for 10 years. Between July 1984 and July 2000-you were the wonderful man I spent most of my time with.   We worked side by side and I learned my craft for which I am highly regarded by not only my peers but yours as well.  I remember the day I gave you my notice-my opening line was " As I write this letter to you, there are tears in my eyes"  Well, there are tears again today as I write this to you.   My goodbye then was much easier because I only lost you 6 of 7 days per week.   There are so many things that were just "ours". Footprints on the office floor leading to cookies, fake consultation letters, Styrofoam chips in your pockets that fluttered out onto the floor of Scotiabank in Bayview Village when you took out your wallet   And the Bell.  On your briefcase that jingled down the halls of Branson Hospital when you were on call.   It has been 20 years since we spent all this time together.  But it seems like yesterday.  So glad to have kept you in my life.   

Grandfather:  being your first grandchild we shared so many special memories - popsicles and orange picking in Florida, late night grill cheese sandwiches when I couldn’t sleep (don’t tell mom, dad or grandmother!), shopping for “snazzy” clothing, having you say the Lord’s Prayer at our wedding, oysters with the Rhinds in the Distillery District, you and Chris endlessly sharing your passion for WWII history, your Churchill busts and mushroom collections, enjoying your famous caesar salads, and even naming J.H. Glasier Rhind after you. You were the patriarch of the Somerville family of 5 kids, 13 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson. Missing you, loving you and know you are watching over all of us for the rest of time.
