Mrs. Katherine "Lucille" Scheerer

Katherine Lucille Scheerer, affectionately known as "Lucille", age 93, passed away August 13, 2019 at St. Luke’s Hospice House in Kansas City, MO, following a short illness. Lucille's services will be Saturday, August 17, 2019. Visitation will be 9:00 A.M. - 10:00 A.M. Funeral Service at 10:00 A.M. at Floral Hills Funeral Home, 7000 Blue Ridge Blvd., Kansas City, MO 64133. Graveside Service to follow in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.

Lucille was born September 24, 1925 in New Cambria, MO to Willie C. and Anna Belle (Peterson) Hughes. She moved to Kansas City following graduation from high school and went to work for Neevel Manufacturing where she eventually met her husband Otto Scheerer. However, Lucille spent most of her career in the garment industry, working for Donnelly Garment Co. (Nelly Don), Chocolate Soup and Hal Hardin Apparel. Lucille spoke very fondly of her days at Nelly Don and was there to help close the plant, rescuing some of the industrial sewing machines and a couple of original Nelly Don dresses, including the first house dress made by Nell Donnelly in 1919, which she later returned to the family. After a short time at Chocolate Soup, Lucille joined Hal Hardin Apparel where she worked until retirement around 1993. Lucille was an amazing seamstress who could create her own patterns and turn them into beautiful garments, which she loved to do for her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and many others. She was also an outstanding hostess whose home was for four decades the site of family gatherings, holiday celebrations and birthdays where she prepared meals for all to enjoy. She truly loved her family and friends and was always willing to help others. Lucille was a member of Ivanhoe United Church of Christ in Raytown, MO.

Lucille was preceded in death by her parents, six siblings and her husband of 66 years, Otto Scheerer.

Survivors include her son, James R. Scheerer; grandson, Todd J. Scheerer and his wife Kim; granddaughter, Gina Scheerer; four great-grandchildren: Hayley, Emile, Hannah and her husband Jackson, and Ginelle, nieces and nephews and other loving family and friends.
