Alexander M. Joyce (Alec), 59, died in his sleep of natural causes on September 17th in his Monument
Beach home. Born in Wareham, MA to Therese and Kilmer Joyce, Alec grew up in Cataumet and
graduated from Bourne High School in 1977. He received his Bachelor’s degrees in History & Economics
from Boston College, and his Juris Doctorate from Syracuse Law School. After law school he spent the
rest of his life living on Cape Cod, where he raised his two children, William and McAlister, who were his
life’s pride and joy.
Alec practiced law on the Cape for over 35 years as the specialist in property law throughout the region.
Actively involved in the community, he sat on the Bourne Open Space Committee, represented the
Bourne Conservation Trust, and worked on the Finance Committee of Saint Elizabeth Seton Parish in
North Falmouth.
A true athlete and competitor, Alec played sports until the day he passed. While he would frequently get
on fire from the three-point line and had a booming serve on the clay tennis courts of the Cataumet
Club, ultimate frisbee was his passion. Known as Ajax, he played ultimate frisbee for over 42 years,
starting Air Bourne in 1977, now Woods Hole Ultimate Frisbee (WHUF), and traveled the world playing
in Ultimate tournaments where he made lifelong friendships.
Alec is survived by two children, William Joyce, of San Francisco, CA, McAlister (Mackie) Joyce of Tampa,
FL and his five siblings Joseph, Benjamin, Helen, Marie and Rosemary. A viewing will be Wednesday,
September 25th at Nickerson in Bourne, and services at St. John’s the Evangelist in Pocasset Thursday,
September 26th at 10 AM.
