Barbara Moseley

As Christmas was approaching, a young Den Mother had to come up with some creative activities for her Cub Scouts. She settled on teaching them to sing a Czech folk song and a Czech Christmas tradition of floating walnut shells in a bowl of water to predict their luck in the coming year. That Den Mother was Barbara and what she was teaching her sons and other young boys was to have pride in their heritage and to recognize the richness that other cultures bring to this country. Whether it was serving as a Den Mother or passing on her mother’s practice of expressing love through hand-made noodles, kolaches, and dill pickles (Granny Pickles as we called them), she was, in her way, teaching us to be inclusive and tolerant of the rich tapestry of cultures that makes us all better people.

Barbara Zdenka (Bednar) Moseley (83) passed away peacefully in Houston and went to be with her loving husband Edwin on Saturday, January 11, 2020. Although she had battled through several strokes and the memory issues that followed, she was always aware of the loved ones around her and the comfort provided by her caregivers.

Barbara was born on the family farm in Latium, Texas on February 6, 1936 as the youngest child of Cyril and Johanna Bednar in a household where she had one brother, four sisters, one half-sister, and nine half-brothers. Barbara graduated Salutatorian from Brenham High School and moved to Houston, where she met and married her partner in life, Edwin Moseley. She and Edwin lived briefly in Topeka, Kansas, but moved back to Houston soon after the birth of their fourth (and favorite) child. Once the children were well on their own ways, Barbara kept busy working first at Centel Business Systems and finally in the administrative offices of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word.

Barbara always enjoyed the moment and was happiest when sharing those times with others, especially with the grandkids. Whether you were learning to make sausage kolaches (klobasniky for the purists out there), fishing at the pond on Barbara and Eddie’s “Perfect Ten” acres near Brenham, enjoying fried chicken or Jordan Almonds (or the occasional Jim Beam and coke), you always knew that she was having just as much fun as you were.

Mrs. Moseley is survived by her children, William R. Moseley and wife Diane Clear Moseley; Michael E. Moseley and wife Debra Gore Moseley; Virginia Moseley Bate and husband Steven Alan Bate; Ronald L. Moseley and wife Deborah Bronikowsky Moseley; grandchildren Kristen Anne Custer, Ashley Nicole Talkington, Logan Eugene Moseley, Katherine Nicole Keathley, Steven Alexander Wininger, Matthew Alan Bate, Megan Ashley Schuchardt, Marcia Jane Moreno, Trevor Edwin Moseley and Ian Mitchell Moseley; great-grandchildren Evan, Luke, Lily, Lainey and Austin; sisters-in-law Mary Alice Tullos and JoAnn Henderson; and numerous nephews and nieces.

Barbara is preceded in death by her husband of 64 years Edwin; her parents Cyril and Johanna Bednar; and siblings Della, Raymond, Mary, and Annie.

Serving as pallbearers are Logan Moseley, Trevor Moseley, Alex Wininger, Evan Wynn, Ian Moseley and Brandon Keathley. Matt Bate, Kyle Talkington, Christopher Schuchardt and Nathaniel Moreno will be honorary pallbearers.
