OLD TOWN--Irene L. Martin, 89, wife of Paul Martin, died peacefully March 21, 2020 at her residence with family by her side after a long battle with cancer. She was born May 5, 1930 in Old Town to Alphonse and Mary (Cote) Martin.
Family was everything to Irene. She was happiest when cooking for a house full of family or playing cards with her sisters. A true force of energy, she would skillfully cook, sew, crochet, knit, braid rugs, make jewelry, weave baskets, can vegetables, make jam, and make a pound of hamburger last a week, often all on the same day. She spoke often of making jewelry or playing cards with her Florida “family”. Irene was a graduate of Old Town High School, class of 1948. She worked as a secretary for the Department of Forestry at the University of Maine and Old Town Adult Education and sold Avon. Irene enjoyed camping, traveling and wintering in Florida. She and dad could do the Polka like no one else.
Irene is survived by her husband of 67 years, Paul, son Kevin Martin and his wife Betina, daughter Lisa Martin and partner Denise Yegge, grandchildren Mandy Martin, Vanessa (Martin) Labuschagne, her husband Christiaan, Amanda (Doucette) Carleton and her husband Andrew, and beloved great grandchildren Brian and Magnolia. Irene is also survived by her sisters Lorraine Preble of Bangor, Jeannette Webb and her husband Bill of Naples, Fl., Juliet Grant of Old Town, Pauline Blair of Bangor, Dorothy Folster and her husband Howard of Enfield, Gail Johnson of Bangor, and brother Richard Martin and wife Carrie of Ellsworth.
Irene was pre-deceased by her parents Alphonse and Mary Martin and brothers Gerald Martin, Willis Martin and Maurice Martin.
The family would like to express special thanks to Paula DesJardins and partner Steve for their selfless caring and kindness for mom and dad whilst wintering at their Florida home. We would also like to thank niece Nancy Aylward for her loving support and kindness and Kindred Hospice during mom’s end of life care.
In consideration of current events, a celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
