Unforgettable. I recall when I put together a chat video for friends who'd met in the Johnny Cash chat room years ago. His handle was "Slow Elk" and everyone sent me video clips to assemble and distribute, because I had a studio. One clip he sent showed him operating a snow blower in what looked like a blizzard to me. I remarked that he might want to change his handle to "SNOW Elk" and he liked that. I miss him, his humor, and his love for life terribly. Good ol' Slow Elk.

Jack was not only a co-worker but my neighbor for several years, I loved his humor, and stories he would tell.  My heart was sad to hear he had passed, my condolences go out to Bobbi and his family. 

It is with great sadness to have to say goodbye to this beautiful man! Jack was such a good man who lived what he believed!  He was such a funny guy that knew how to make you laugh and lift our spirits.  My heart goes out to my dear friend Bobbi and all the family today and hope your knowledge that we will all be together again brings you some comfort during these very sad days♥️

Jack & I are cousins with our fathers being brothers. We both lived in Valentine, Ne as kids along with our brothers & sister. It was a great life playing on the streets of sand barefoot. Jack & his family moved to Scottsbluff so it was difficult to keep up with the family but there has always been the connection & the memories.

I was a young 18 year old wanting to get back to my roots in Gering after living in Germany, Texas and Utah.  I started working at the Star Herald in 1977 and Jack became an immediate friend.  We use to go out for a drink after work and laugh about the day and where life wasn’t taking us.  He taught me a lot about the newspaper industry but more importantly, he taught me about real friendship.  I left Nebraska in 1979, and it was just 2 years ago that Jack and I reconnected through Facebook. It was fun  catching up, hearing about the love he had for his family and the good ole days at the Herald.  This brings great sadness that he is gone, but Jack you will never be forgotten! This truly hurts my heart. Though we never met in person, we chatted only since the late 1990s on the Johnny Cash website, as we were both avid fans of the Man in Black. I didn't know what his real name was for the longest, as he used the handle "Slow  Elk," and I think that was given to him by his grandfather, if I remember right. Slow Elk had a great sense of humor and we chatted about a great many things over the years. Sadly, the chat room we used went away and we lost touch since then. He was so proud of his family, speaking lovingly of them always. And he took great pride in his work, and had to have been the last of his breed, considering how many decades his career spanned, and the many changes in the business. I live in Southwest Florida and many years ago he was visiting Orlando (about three hours from me) and he called me. We had the greatest conversation, being able to hear each other's voices. And if it had been earlier in the day, I'd have driven that distance to shake his hand and hug his neck. Now I'm wishing I'd have done it, no matter how late. It was easy to tell what a lovable guy he was, and it saddens me greatly that he's gone. I will always remember him and the fun conversations we had. He lives on, in the lives of his family and friends, especially if they pass along the goodness that he imparted to each of them. Farewell for now, Slow Elk, but I'll be shaking your hand and hugging your neck someday, in that land that is fairer than day. ~Your ol' buddy, Swamp Rat.
