It is with great sadness, that Lorne Bennett announce the passing of his brother, Steven William Bennett, age 69, on May 8, 2024. Steven was born in Rockglen, SK on August 25, 1954 to Stan and Nettie Bennett. He had an older sister, Eileen and a younger brother, Lorne. In 1960 he started his schooling at Coal Creek School, which he attended for about five years before it was closed down. He was then bused to Rockglen School where he graduated from the 12th grade. Steven was born a farmer at heart. He started driving tractors and vehicles at an early age, even though he could barely reach the pedals. He helped his Dad on the farm, and later purchased his own piece of land. This was the start to fulfilling his dream of being a true farmer. To help with the farming costs, he bought a tandem truck, where he would haul grain and cattle in the surrounding area. When he wasn't at home, he custom combined with several different crews from the area. They would start combining crops in Texas and work their way north, ending up in the Peace River area of Alberta. This may have been his PAID working holidays, which he enjoyed and always had a story to tell. Steven's heart was always in farming. To him this was a passion and not a job. He took pride in planting and harvesting a variety of crops. In spite of his illness, he was committed to his dreams and continued farming and always kept alive, his hopes of planting another crop. He cherished his hunting trips with his Dad. They hunted moose, deer, coyotes, and rabbits. Steven had a passion for traveling both in Canada and other countries. The desire to travel started with family trips to Alaska, Yukon, BC, and the Black Hills. He took the opportunity to vacation in other places like Cuba, Mexico, southern United States, as well as numerous places in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. He traveled with Henry where they visited family in New Zealand, Ireland, New York, and Toronto. His desire to see different scenery, was eminent as he would take a different route even when he had to pick up parts for the farm. Steven had a range of interests. He enjoyed doing genealogy research, history, quading, fishing, and snowmobiling. He was fun loving, very social, enjoyed outdoor life, always joking, very accepting, a kind person, who could have a discussion with any and all age groups. He had a great love for his dogs, of which he had several, Kyser, Clancey and Pipper. Steven had two favorite sayings: “An all that” and “Oh to heck” which he used in almost every conversation. He became involved and served on the various farming boards, which contributed to their success. He was always available to help any neighbors as needed. Steven was predeceased by his sister Eileen (Aug 27, 1971), parents Stan (Mar 29, 2001) and Nettie (Sopko) (Feb 21, 2004), numerous Aunts and Uncles, and other relatives. He is survived by his brother Lorne, as well as his cousins and their extended families. Steve will be missed by all, but we will cherish all the wonderful memories we have with and of him.
Irish Prayer
May the road rise to meet you
May the wind be always at your back
May the sun shine warm upon your face
and the rains fall soft upon your fields
Until we meet again
May God hold you in the hollow of his hand
Rest in peace Steven. We will miss you.
