H. Joseph Hughes, MD, 95, of Birmingham, Alabama passed away peacefully Saturday, May 11, 2024, with his family by his side. Dr. Hughes was born in Birmingham on June 11, 1928, and has been happily married to his beloved wife Betty Ray Price for 72 years. After attending Phillips High School he received his B.S. degree from Birmingham Southern College in 1949. He then attended the University of Pennsylvania Medical School and graduated in 1953, followed by an internship at Evanston Hospital in Evanston, IL from 1953 to 1954. He then served with pride and honor in the US Medical Corps in Washington DC from 1954 to 1956. Between 1956 and 1959 he completed his residency at Mayo Clinic Rochester, MN and received a Fellowship in Internal Medicine from the Mayo Foundation in Rochester, MN. He was asked to stay on to practice at Mayo Clinic but chose to practice Internal Medicine at Norwood Clinic in Birmingham from 1959 to 1997. During that time he was Board Certified in Internal Medicine by The American Board of Internal Medicine and was a Fellow of The American College of Physicians. He also served with distinction in the Jefferson County Medical Society, Medical Association of the State of Alabama, American Medical Association, and was a Clinical Associate at The University of Alabama Medical School. Additionally, he was an active member at Canterbury United Methodist Church. Upon his retirement he continued his dedication to serving others by participating in two medical mission trips to Panama with Canterbury and also served on the board at M Power Ministries. Some of his great joys were being an avid turkey hunter, saltwater and freshwater fishing, playing golf as a member of The Country Club of Birmingham and snow skiing with family in Colorado. He was a wonderful and caring husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was known for his many acts of kindness, gentle demeanor, work ethic, and deep faith. He often spoke fondly of the generations of patients he was able to serve during his medical practice. Continuing his loving legacy are his children: Ann Hamilton (Ronnie), Charles Price Hughes (d. 1976), Michael Roberts Hughes (Amy), Elizabeth Elrod (David); grandchildren Reid Edward Hamilton (Lauren), Price Joseph Hamilton (Ashley), Ross Hughes Hamilton (Kathryn), Jordan Leigh Hughes, Ethan Baker Hughes, Rebecca Elizabeth Elrod, Harrison Hughes Elrod, Alexander Thomas Elrod, Zachary David Elrod; and five great grandchildren. A visitation with family will be held Thursday, May 16, 2024, at Canterbury United Methodist Church at 1:30 followed by a Memorial Service at 2:30. In lieu of flowers the family suggests making a donation to Canterbury United Methodist Church, 350 Overbrook Road, Birmingham, AL 35213.
