Originally from Texas, John’s military family moved frequently and eventually settled in Virginia, where John graduated from high school and enlisted in the Seabees branch of the US Navy. A veteran, John served for four years and was honorably discharged at Port Hueneme, California in 1978. Having met and married his wife Kathryn, the couple moved to Washington State to make their home in Bremerton. John was employed as a rigger in code 740 at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton until his retirement in 2011. He and his wife were also parishioners at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church.
Music was always John’s passion. As a gifted guitar player he performed solo and with other musicians at several local venues. His talents also extended to woodworking, creating beautiful furniture and toys he would gift to others or sell at vendor fairs. He was a long time local member of the American Legion, the Fraternal Order of Eagles #192, and the Volunteer Chores Services program with Catholic Community Services. As a volunteer, John installed bathroom grab bars and performed maintenance for those underserved elderly in his community so they could remain in their homes. A Good Samaritan, he often stopped to help people needing roadside assistance or lend a hand to someone in need. He and his wife also enjoyed camping and loved visiting the Olympic Mountains or Washington’s Pacific coast.
John is survived by Kathryn, his wife of 45 years; his son, John L. Breslin III; his grandson Aiden Breslin; his five Breslin siblings: Robert of Alabama, Elizabeth (Gore) of North Carolina, William of Ohio, Bonnie (Timmons) of Ohio, and Michelle (Carroll) of North Carolina; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
An outdoor memorial service will be held for John at Ivy Green Cemetery in Bremerton, May 30th at 11 a.m. John was proud to be a veteran and to honor other veterans, so in lieu of flowers, please consider donating in his name to the Gary Sinise Foundation, which supports America veterans, first responders, and their families at https://www.garysinisefoundation.org/
