John is survived by his sister, Gail Alexander Webber of Greensboro; his niece, Sonja Bugary and husband Rob, and their children of Bremerton, Washington. John was predeceased by his mother, Ruth Brown Alexander and his father, Hugh Alexander.
John worked for Genuine Parts Company (NAPA) for thirty years. Then he worked for J&H Machine tools until retirement.
A lover of music from childhood, JOhn started piano lessons while in high school and later took organ lessons. He also sang in various church choirs, starting in high school, and also played classical guitar.
A volunteer pianist and organist for several churches, John also served as a choir director.
A skilled photographer, his interest in photography began at an early age. John's first camera was a small Brownie camera, a classic which Gail still has. Over the years his professional-level photographic talents bloomed, and he often developed the film and prints in his own darkroom.
John spoke fluent Spanish and loved the language. He took a lengthy trip to Ecuador, and enjoyed teaching English to Spanish speakers, some of whom became lifelong friends. He was intellectually curious: his many books included scores of music books, Spanish and Greek Bibles, as well as religious and philosophical treatises.
In lieu of flowers, hug someone you love.
