Joann Schmitt, age 87, of Schererville, IN, passed away peacefully on May 6, 2024 with her loving family at her side.
Joann was the loving wife to the late Ronald Schmitt; cherished mother to Cheryl (Les Gibbs) Balzer, Pamela (Tim) Companik and Laura (Joseph) Byrom; proud grandmother to Carrie (Joseph) Ryan, Kimberly (Chris) Chindris, Jill Clark, Allison (Dan) Wozny, and Erica (James) Barlo; great-grandmother to Caroline, Charlie, Ilana, Grace, Liam, Julia and Jimmy; beloved sister to the late Raymond Gaskey and the late Florence Skurka; and aunt to many.
Joann is a faithful member of St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church. She retired after 17 years of honorable service at Community Hospital. After retirement, she continued her selfless services as a volunteer at Franciscan Hospital of Munster. She and her husband, Ron, enjoyed traveling going to Hawaii, Alaska, Florida, and Vegas. She was loyal Cubs fan, trying to watch every game. Joann enjoyed swimming and exercising at Fitness Point in Munster, socializing and going to lunch with her old work friends and neighbors. She especially enjoyed spending time with her growing family, and hosting holiday parties.
Visitation will be Thursday, May 9, 2024 from 4:00 - 8:00 pm at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 8178 Cline Avenue, Crown Point, IN 46307. Visitation will continue from 9:00 am until the time of her Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am on Friday, May 10, 2024 at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, 500 Northgate Drive, Dyer, IN 46311. She will be laid to rest by her husband at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens at a later date.
Memorials may be given toward St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Les Turner ALS.
