Born in Brewster, New York on June 20, 1941, he was the son of the late Irene (Bouclis) Economou and Lazarus “Leo” Economou, and husband of the late Maria.
He attended Brewster Public schools and Ryder College, and worked for the New York Telephone Company up until his retirement. While living in Connecticut, he was a member of Assumption Greek Orthodox church, and living in Maryland, he was a member of Mid Atlantic Community Church.
Basil was known for his love of the Giants, Yankees, and anything related to Elvis. During his retirement years he worked as a bus driver for New Fairfield Public Schools which gave him such joy. He loved outings to restaurants, but more so, spending time and being in the presence with his friends and family.
After moving to Maryland he was active in traveling, visiting friends, spending time at the beach, snuggling with his dogs, attending soccer games, and becoming a ‘local’ at some of his favorite eateries. His final home was Spring Lakes Assisted Living where he was welcomed into a wonderful community of friends with both residents and staff members. He was involved in all activities but was especially known for his love of Karaoke, Bingo, Uno, drums and lunch outings. Having a unique name, his tag line when people needed clarification was “My name's Basil, I’m the spice of your life.”
Basil is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Dawson and her husband, Jeff and their children: Logan, Cameryn, Sydney and Avery Dawson; his step-daughter, Caryn Hasseltine, and her husband, David, and their children: Taylor and Morgan Hasseltine. In addition he is survived by several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday, June 11, 2024 at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church 30 Clapboard Ridge Rd., Danbury, CT.
Contributions in Basil's memory may be made to the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 30 Clapboard Ridge Rd, Danbury, CT 06811.
