Gladys Trommer (née Hamberger)
09/02/1928 – 05/14/2024
Born in a home in Glendale, Gladys Trommer lived primarily her whole life in Queens. She held a degree in music from Queens College and maintained an affiliation through her long-time participation in the QC Choral Society. Her love of music was transmitted to her children in the form of appreciation of ballet, theater and the arts.
Gladdy, as she was called, met Joe in her youth across the rear alleyways of their adjacent Glendale houses. They married and raised 3 children [Barbara (Joe (dec.), Nancy (Larry), and Richard (dec.)] first for a short while in Kingston, then Flushing and, since 1964 in her home in Kew Gardens, where she spent her final years. In addition to managing two other homes, a house on Shelter Island and a condominium in Highland Beach, FL, she worked in the family business, David Hamberger, Inc., which bore her father’s name as founder. A manufacturer of seasonal displays and animated figures, the business employed nearly 100 workers and Gladdy was the office manager and led the talented flower shop contingent, she salvaged many artificial flowers from storage and guided the flower department ladies to turn them into beautiful displays, turning out large volumes of artful works, wreaths and other display items mostly during the busy Fall season for the holidays for their clients, chain stores and window fronts mostly along the Eastern seaboard but extending all around the country. She was an essential component in all major decisions including the sale of the property, and remained proud of their work there which supported many families and brought so much joy.
During Joe’s protracted illness, Gladdy took care of him herself until professionals were needed. She was extremely devoted. After his passing, she soon developed a similar infirmity which only worsened. She was a nurturer to many with a strong sense of decency whose mark will be long felt as an example to follow for those who knew her.
