Joyce was born in Cromwell Land, St. Mary, Jamaica on February 8, 1944 to parents Cecil Smith and Jane Williams. She attended the Clonmel Primary school in St. Mary and after leaving school at the tender age of 15 years old, for a short time tried her hand at learning dressmaking. She then journeyed to Kingston in search of work when she met Seymour Roy Dockery and a relationship blossomed between them both. Joyce was introduced to the hairdressing industry and pursued a career as a Beautician at Dockery’s Coiffures, Barry Street in downtown Kingston. She later went on to start her own hairdressing business at home. On December 25, 1971 Joyce May Smith married Seymour Roy Dockery who has been the absolute love of her life. She later ventured into her second business with her husband and together they launched their family business Doc’s Jerk Center which was very successful for over 30 years until she decided to retire to spend more time with her grandchildren. Despite her retirement, she continued doing hairdressing which was her first passion, and up until the time of her passing she was still actively doing what she so loved and enjoyed.
Joyce will be remembered as a selfless, loving caring person and friend, an altruistic wife and mother who always had a smile, even when times were tough. She had a quiet strength, never complained and always looked to a better future. In a nutshell “To know her was to love her”. She was loved by so many and will be deeply missed.
