It is with profound sadness the Ivimey family announces the sudden death, from health complications, of their beloved son and brother, Thomas Robert Ivimey, on May 3, 2024 in Regina, Sask. Thomas was 23 years old.
Thomas was born on October 31st, 2000 to the absolute delight of his big sister Maggie and parents Rob and Colleen. Later, he became a big brother to Alex.
Throughout his life, Thomas demonstrated a joy for simple things in life. In his early years, he loved trucks and tools and was often seen trailing his grandfather around his workshop. He was always bright eyed and excited about new experiences.
Thomas attended Rockingham School in Halifax and later Fairview Junior High School and Halifax West High School, where he made and maintained many friendships. From an early age, he decided he wanted to be a police officer and he never wavered from his goals, eventually attending Saint Mary’s University, and obtaining a degree in Criminology. During his university time, he was awarded a student internship with Canada Border Services and used this opportunity to brush up on his French.
In January of this year, Thomas’ dream was realized when he received his acceptance into the RCMP training program in Regina, or Depot. From day one at Depot, “Cadet” Thomas Ivimey immersed himself in training and it was evident he bonded with his troop mates there. His training was all he imagined it would be and he was looking forward to finding out where he would be posted.
Despite a diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes, Thomas was active in sports throughout his life. By age 3 he was learning to ski and enjoyed many years with dear friends and family snowboarding and snowmobiling in Newfoundland, where many family members reside. At age 5 he started hockey in a community where hockey ruled. At 10 years old he told his parents his dream was to be a hockey goalie and he never looked back. Throughout his life he paddled and learned to swim at Maskwa Aquatic Club. Later he obtained his swimming instructor certifications and worked at Canada Games Centre. Thomas played golf, curling, volleyball, baseball, basketball, and soccer but hockey remained his true passion; he played until 2023 with teammates he had played with most of his life. Those friendships formed in hockey remained his most valued and Jake, Jake and Sam always had his back. He loved them dearly.
The void left by Thomas’s passing is felt by too many people to mention. He is survived by his parents Rob and Colleen, sister Maggie and brother Alex, grandparents Pat and Jean Carew are grieving the loss of their dear grandson. He also leaves his Godmother and Aunt Sandi Carew (Ian Piper), uncles Mike Carew (Daniela Turk), Sean Carew (Wendy Smith), and Rob's sister Karla Ivimey and Uncle Paul Flemming. Thomas is predeceased by grandparents Marina Ivimey (Paul Phillips) and Bob Ivimey (Elsie Tan). Also leaving to mourn is Thomas’s girlfriend Amber MacRoberts. Thomas enjoyed a close relationship with his cousins Jake and Sean Flemming and Abbey Turk Carew. His cousins in Newfoundland had a special place in Thomas’ heart and he enjoyed many adventures with Christoper, Stephen and David Mallard and Jonathan Collett, Katie and Sophie Furlong. His extended family in Newfoundland and beyond know much they meant to Thomas and their presence in his life was a true blessing.
Our entire family was blessed to have close friendships including the entire Lefebvre family (Alain, Monique, Maxime, Luc and Liam) and very special relationships with our neighbours on Nightingale Drive. The Halifax Hawks hockey community provided us with countless friends and many happy experiences. Memories of hockey championships, camping trips, driveway parties, massive street hockey games and family and friend get togethers will sustain us forever.
Visitation is scheduled for Monday, May 13, 2024 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm and 6:00 to 8:00 pm. A memorial service will be Tuesday, May 14th at 10:00 am. Reception to follow. All are welcome to come and share stories. All at J. A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax. NS.
For anyone wishing to honor Thomas or express condolences, we suggest donations to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation www.jdrf.ca
