Carolyn Tynes Cowan died May 8, 2024. She was born in Birmingham, September 27, 1927, the daughter of the late Carolyn Bayard Shields and William Doric Tynes, III. Carolyn was a lifelong member of Independent Presbyterian Church where she was active in the work of the Sunday School, Women’s Organization, the Guild, and John N. Lukens Library.
Carolyn enjoyed more than 50 years as a member of the Wednesday Bridge Girls and Friday Lunch Group. She was also a member of the Junior League of Birmingham, the Canterbury Club, the Duffers golf group, and the Married Ladies Reading Club. She was a member of the 1946 class at Phillips High School and attended Sweet Briar College.
Proceeding her in death were her husband, George Lloyd Cowan, III, and son, George Lloyd Cowan, IV, and brother William Doric Tynes, Jr. Carolyn is survived by her brother Dr. Bayard Shields Tynes, a daughter, Elizabeth (Bunny) Cowan Bolton and her husband Reginal, and by her sons, David Lloyd Cowan and William Tynes Cowan and his wife Monica Cantwell. She is also survived by grandchildren, Hunter Bolton (Holli), Abbey Bolton (Christopher Mayes), Molly and Elana Cowan, and by her great-grandchildren Hayleigh, Hunter Neal, and Hannah Bolton.
A Memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 16, 2024 beginning at 3:30 pm in the Chapel of Independent Presbyterian Church with the family receiving friends following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in memory of Carolyn Cowan may be made to John N. Lukens Library at Independent Presbyterian Church or the O’Neal Library.
