Edith M. (Barber) Ellery, of Homosassa, FL, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 12, 2024, two days shy of her 90th birthday from a long, brave battle with Alzheimer’s. She was a resident of Royal Dalton Assisted Living and Memory Care. Edith was born in Throop, NY on May 14, 1934, the daughter of Ernest and Estella (Roberts) Barber. She was the seventh child of a family of twelve. She dearly loved being a wife, Mom, homemaker and Grandma. Edith loved jigsaw puzzles, cryptograms, all types of crafts, reading, baking (the best apple pies ever), sewing, Elvis, being a Girl Scout leader, traveling, line dancing and all things space, including NASA and especially Apollo 11, which her husband Jim was a part of. Edith is survived by her children: Kim (Allen) Bennett and Katherine (Werner) Mendler; two grandchildren: Zack and Samantha Gonick; siblings Beatrice Hudson, Richard (Stephanie) Barber, Nancy Fairman, Marilyn (Walter) Hannig and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Edith was predeceased by her first husband of 9 months, Earl Slocum; James F. Ellery, the love of her life for 30 years, and longtime companion of 20 years, Hans Stedtler. She was also predeceased by her siblings Elizabeth B. Guthrie, Ernest Raymond Barber, Janice B. Fleury, Mavis B. Walczyk, Bernice B. Weatherstone, James H. Barber and Robert F. Barber. Edith was known for her quick wit and classic one liners. One of her best was when her daughter Kim told her “Mom, you need to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.” And her response was “You need to evaporate.” Classic Edie! Celebrations of Edie’s life will be held at later dates in Simpsonville, SC and Auburn, NY. Anyone wishing to make a donation in memory of our Mom, which would be much appreciated, can do so to Vitas Hospice of Citrus County, 3280 W. Audubon Park Path, Lecanto, FL 34461 or the Alzheimer’s Association of Citrus County. Arrangements entrusted to Macrini-Wilder Funeral Home, Homosassa, FL. www.macrini-wilderfuneral.com
