Born on November 7, 1944, in NJ, he was the son of James F. Block & Grace J. Block (nee Dignan). He graduated from Seton Hall University in 1966. Jim served as an officer & tank commander in the US Marine Corps from 1966-1969, deployed to Vietnam in 1967-68, and finished his time as a Captain at Paris Island, SC. He went on to pursue a 35-year career as a telephone lineman/splicer with New Jersey Bell/Verizon. In retirement, he served the town of New Milford as a driver for their Senior Citizen van for 15 years.
Jim was best known in his community for his countless hours of service to several organizations to include New Milford Little League, Cub Scout Pack 269, Boy Scout Troop 291, the Church of the Ascension, and many other local organizations.
He is survived by his loving wife, Christine Ann Block (nee Setzer), two sons & daughter-in-law: James F. Block and Michael P. & Melissa L. Block, and four grandchildren (Bella Grace, James Thomas, Caleb James, and Jacob Dignan). He is also survived by his two brothers: Peter J. Block and Robert J. Block.
A visitation and vigil service will be held on Thursday, May 23rd from 5-9pm at Brookside Funeral Home-Cypress Creek, vigil service will begin at 7:30pm. His funeral mass will be held on the following day Friday, May 24th at 11am at Saint Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Community and will be immediately followed by his burial with military honors at Houston National Cemetery on Friday, May 24th at 12:45pm.
Cards may be sent to Jim's wife: Christine Block at 20330 Willow Trace Dr, Cypress, TX 77433. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made on Jim’s behalf to Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) or Boys Town, two charities that Jim personally supported.
Jim will be remembered for his kindness, sense of humor, service to others, and ability to fix anything. He truly lived out the Scout law. He touched the lives of many and will be deeply missed.
Jim’s life can be summed up by three words that he held dear to his heart, “Husband, Father, Patriot.”
