Miriam was born on July 24, 1938 to Mario and Eva Gomez in Holguin, Cuba. After Miriam graduated from Notre Dame Academy in 1955, She went on to work for the parish offices of Gesu Catholic Church in downtown Miami. Florida.
In 1956, Miriam met Luis Felipe Lay at a parish dance and married a few years later in 1959. Miriam and Luis went on to have six children: Myriam Cristina, Luis Felipe Jr (Gloria), Dennis Albert (Vivian), Joseph Edward, Rosemarie Juanes (Santiago), and Robert Anthony (Machelle). Luis & Miriam lived in Havana, New York City, Miami, Key West and finally Houston.
Miriam spent most of her time involved in the parish, her children’s school activities and family events. She was an active member of many church and social groups.
Miriam was predeceased by her brother Mario Gomez. She is survived by her siblings Martha De Izaguirre (Fernando), Frank Gomez (Gema), Margie Flood and Edward Gomez (Denise), her grandchildren Cristina Mendoza (Luis), Brittany Garcia (Daniel), Jacquelyn Olexa (Travis), Sterling Lay, Andrew Lay, Joshua Lay, Dennis Lay, Christopher Lay (Sandy), Joseph Lay (Stephanie), Melissa Kelley (Dominic), Jonathan Lay, Nathaniel Juanes, Carmen Lay and Hayley Lay, as well as her great-grandchildren, Evelina, Aidan, Gabriel, Harper, Christopher, and Liliana.
Visitation will be held at Garden Oaks Funeral Home on Thursday, May 16 from 4:00-8:00pm. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Justin Martyr Catholic Church on Friday, May 17 at 10:30am. Miriam will be laid to rest at Forest Park Southwest Cemetery on May 17 at 1:00pm.
