Born on 11/28/26 to John and Anna Lee Scalf, in Betsy Layne, KY, she grew up during the depression and World War II. She had three older brothers and one older sister. Times were tough for a coal miner’s daughter, but she pursued what she loved to do, which was drawing; charcoal and colored pencils, water colors, whatever she could find. She left home as soon as she was old enough to stay with her brother, Hubert, taking care of the kids while he and his wife Marie worked. Eventually her family pulled their resources and sent her to the Art Academy in Cincinnati, and from there to the Apex School of Design, where she graduated. She worked for a design company, and won awards for her successful designs.
She married Harry Clark, of Cincinnati and had two children, Priscilla (Sandi) and Stephen. She began painting during the day, and even taught some of the neighbors. She later married Wayne Wetzel, and taught him to paint as well. To her credit, she taught acrylic painting through community education, and won first place for several paintings in the local county fair. Her favorite subjects were flowers and seascapes. However, she believed she was her best as a volunteer in the gift shop, at Memorial Hospital, Jacksonville FL.
She is predeceased by her parents, siblings, husband Wayne Wetzel, son Stephen Clark, grandchildren Stephanie Clark and Shane Fennick. She is survived by daughter, Sandi Clark, step children Michael Wetzel and Nancy Pullen, and a total of 6 step grandchildren, 10 step great grandchildren, and 2 step great great grandchildren.
Her paintings will be displayed during the service. If interested, proceeds will be used to bring art to a mission center in Guatemala. Contact Sandi at 904-210-2199
