Born on February 2, 1943, in High Point, North Carolina, Susan was the beloved daughter of Julian Clyde Franklin and Georgia Anderson Smith, and sister to William Acree (Bill) Franklin, who predeceased her. Her early years in Guilford County were filled with the simple joys of family life, which laid the foundation for the compassionate and caring woman she would become.
Susan found joy in the earth's beauty, cultivating her garden with a passion that matched her nurturing nature. Her home was a testament to her skills as a homemaker, with every corner filled with warmth and a welcoming ambiance. An avid reader, Susan often could be found with a book in hand, lost in stories as she imparted the love of reading to her children and grandchildren.
In a beautiful ceremony on May 24, 2019, Susan married her soulmate, Gary Arter. Together, they built a loving home in Longs, South Carolina, fostering a family environment rich with laughter, support, and endless love. Susan's nurturing nature was a cornerstone of their home, making it a welcoming haven for many.
Susan was previously married to Kenneth Dewey Baty, with whom she shared the formative years of family life. Their union brought forth her beloved children, Tom and Laura, and taught her the intricate dance of love and partnership, enriching her life’s journey.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Gary Arter; her son, Tom Baty, and his wife, Tammie, of Tulsa, Oklahoma; her daughter, Laura Geiser of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; her bonus-daughter, Vicky Hill of Longs, South Carolina; and her nephews, Benjamin Franklin and his wife, Lisa, of Wake Forest, North Carolina, and Richard Franklin and his wife, Heather, of Reidsville, North Carolina.
Susan was a proud grandmother to four grandchildren — Tommy, Tyler, Brandon, and Arista — who will miss her deeply. Her legacy of kindness, patience, and positivity will live on through them.
