Funeral service Sara-Ella Collins Kurth, 95, of Lufkin will be held at 2PM on Friday, May 17, 2024, at Gipson Funeral Home with Bro. Mark Wilke officiating. Interment will follow at Garden of Memories Memorial Park.
Mrs. Kurth was born October 19, 1928, in Huntsville, Texas to Bolivar Lee Collins, Jr. and Lottie Belle Lockey. She was a fifth-generation Texan. She married Robert “Bobby” Lee Kurth on August 25, 1949 in Lufkin, Texas. They were married forty-seven years. They had three children, Karen Gertrude, Robert Lee, Jr., and Roy Collins. Sara passed away at her home on Saturday, May 11, 2024.
Sara was an accomplished musician. She played violin, trombone, bassoon, piano, and organ. She represented the State of Texas in a youth orchestra at the age of 13. Sara was taught the violin by her mother who had a Violin Ensemble in Lufkin.
Sara was a 1945 graduate of Lufkin High School where she was in the band and was a majorette. She and her mother graduated from Stephen F. Austin State College in 1948 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. Sara taught in Diboll, Houston, Japan, and at the Lufkin State School.
Sara was active in many civic, and lineage groups. In the early 1960’s she headed the annual Heart Fund Drive. She was in the Medical Wives Auxiliary, Lufkin Story League, Lufkin Community Playhouse, and the Lufkin Music Study Club. She and Bobby became interested in genealogy and began joining many lineage societies. Sara served as a chapter or state officer in the DRT, DAR, UDC, Daughters of the American Colonists, Colonial Dames IVII Century, Colonial Daughters of the 17th Century, Magna Charta Dames and Barons, Southern Dames of America, Crown of Charlemagne, Guild of St. Margaret, Colonial and Antebellum Bench and Bar and Colonial and Atebellum Planters and USD 1812.
Sara was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; son, Roy Collins Kurth; her Great-granddaughter, Hannah Sara-Elise Hall; and nephew, Walter Connally Powell, Jr.
Sara is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Ronnie Hall; son, Robert “Bob” Kurth; grandchildren, Ryan and Rusti Hall, Kristen Hall Reid, Ashley and Bob Allen, and Annabelle Kurth; great-grandchildren, Daegan Reid, Hallie Beth, Harlie Grace, Bentley Ryann, and Boston Mae Hall; her sister and brother-in-law, Bolivia and Connally Powell; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
