Obituary of Barbara Brown Rexrode
Barbara Jean Brown Rexrode, 77, passed away at her home at Smith Mountain Lake, VA on May 10, 2024, after a courageous battle with metastatic breast cancer. Born in Lynchburg, VA, to Osborne and Margaret Brown, Barbara was affectionately nicknamed “Buzz” by her father, a term of endearment that stayed with her throughout her life. Barbara graduated from E.C. Glass High School in 1964 and remained close with her fellow classmates, fondly known as the “Gals of ’64.” She studied French at William and Mary, where she became a lifelong member of the Kappa Delta sorority, embracing its values of integrity and honor in the bonds of enduring friendships. During her college years, Barbara's life changed forever when she met Ralph Rexrode on a serendipitous blind date. Their instant connection blossomed into a 57-year-long love affair, beginning with their marriage in 1966. Their union was blessed with the arrival of two children, Chris in 1969 and Jennifer in 1970. In 1972, Barbara became the proud wife of a Lynchburg Police Officer when Ralph joined the police department. Barbara embarked on a remarkable career of her own in broadcasting in 1974, starting as a bookkeeper at WWOD AM radio. During her time there she learned the various aspects of the radio business and held numerous positions, including DJ and Program Director. Her journey led her to join a fledgling AM country music station, which later became WYYD FM radio. There she ascended the ranks to the position of Station Manager where she became an equity partner in the station’s parent company and managed other business holdings. Barbara became an icon in the radio business, shattering barriers in the industry and earning recognition among her peers and colleagues. She was also a savvy advertiser and is remembered by many clients who became close friends during their annual trips to various Caribbean destinations. Upon her retirement in 1999, Barbara dedicated herself to her family and friends. Known for her proactive approach to helping others, everyone knew that if you wanted it done and done right, she would take care of it. When not serving others, she found joy in outdoor activities such as golf, tennis, skiing, and fishing. Many cherished memories were made by the water, where Barbara loved spending time with loved ones, watching a sunset, laughing, and playing games. True to her sorority pledge, Barbara was well known by all as a confident leader, high-achiever, responsible citizen, and lifelong friend. To her family, she was known as Mimi, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Barbara is survived by her husband Ralph Rexrode; son Chris Rexrode and spouse Gail; daughter Jennifer Whitt and spouse Jonathan; grandchildren Raven Thompson and spouse Rob, Caymen Rexrode and spouse Laura Baird, Travis Rexrode, Ashlyn Grishaw and spouse Heath, and AJ Whitt; great-grandchildren Riley Thompson and Oakley Grishaw; numerous relatives; and her loving Westie Rocky. She will be greatly missed by all. The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 16, 2024 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel from 6-8 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held the following day at the same location at 11 a.m. with interment to follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, Barbara requested that donations be made in her memory to either of her two favorite charities, the American Cancer Society and the ASPCA.
