David Rudolph Goodman, Jr., age 96, of Memphis, Tennessee, passed away on May 11, 2024. He was born February 14, 1928 in Corinth, Mississippi, the son of David Rudolph and Mattie Antonetta (Burns) Goodman.
David grew up on his parents' farm near Shiloh National Military Park, Tennessee and was a student at Shiloh School, grades one through twelve. He attended the University of Tennessee at Martin for two years then transferred to University of Tennessee in Knoxville where he completed his Bachelor of Science Degree in Animal Husbandry. Following graduation, David joined the United States Army. After basic and other training, he was shipped to join US soldiers in the Korean War. As a medic and communications specialist, he spent several months on and near the 38th Parallel before returning home and being honorably discharged in 1957.
David obtained a sales job with Oscar Mayer Meat Packing Company and relocated to Memphis. After several years in this business, he joined APCO Oil Corporation that ultimately led him to Cone Solvents Incorporated from which he retired in 1993.
David was an avid sportsman. He played and enjoyed watching baseball, basketball and football. He also spent many hours fishing in various waters and hunting with friends and family in countless wooded areas. Being the family historian, he authored and published a 471-page book, which he graciously presented to family and friends whose lives had been touched by the Goodman family in some generation. He was a longstanding member of Park Avenue Church of Christ.
He is survived by his nephew, James F. Goodman; niece, Camille Goodman Judy (Jack); and numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews, friends and business associates.
David was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Wilbur and Lowell Goodman.
Family and friends will gather Thursday, May 23 beginning at nine o’clock in the morning until funeral services begin at ten o’clock all in the North Hall of Memphis Funeral Home, 5599 poplar Avenue, Memphis, Tennessee 38119. Interment will begin around 1:30 that afternoon in Henry Cemetery, 3042 N Polk Street, Corinth, Mississippi.
