He was born on May 28, 1938 to Leon and Myrtle Barnes.
Ray was the founder and owner of Barnes Paper Company, which he still ran on a full time basis and considered his employees family. He enjoyed spending time with his family, playing golf and fishing with his grandsons at the beach. Nothing brought him more joy than the addition of his great grandchildren.
Ray served in the US Army and was a member of Hoover Country Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leon and Myrtle (Shaw) Barnes, and brother, Mickey Barnes.
Ray is survived by his sons, Donny Barnes and Chris Barnes (Kelly) of Hoover, his grandchildren Taylor Barnes (Morgan), Matt Barnes (Calah), Mary Katherine Barnes, Zac Barnes all of Hoover, Emily Mann (Kyal) of Pell City; his great-grandchildren, Elisabeth, Brodie & Barrett Barnes and Wilder & Riggs Mann; the Mother of his sons, Mildred Cockrell Barnes; his brothers, Wayne Barnes (Martha) of Alexander City, Hugh Barnes (Sara) of Childersburg, AL, Phil Barnes (Joan) of Quincy, FL, and Terry Barnes of Sylacauga, AL; sisters, Joan Scroggins (Moody) of Wilsonville, AL, Pam Smith of Atlanta, GA, and Diane Mitchell (Terry) of Sylacauga, AL; several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at Southern Heritage Funeral Home on Friday, May 17 from 12:30-2:00 pm followed by a service at 2:00 pm. The family will have a graveside immediately following the service at Southern Heritage Cemetery.
