It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Charles Francis Joseph Driscoll in his 95th year. “Charlie” was the loving husband of Nell (nee Dohan) for almost 70 years. He was a father and best friend to his 4 boys and a wonderful father-in-law to their wives: Bob & Andrea, Gary & Joanne, Doug & Sharon, and Ted & Sandy. Charlie was also blessed with 6 adoring grandchildren Michelle (Ryan), Jenna (Nick), Laura (Josh), Becky (Chris), Dalton and Dustin, and also lucky to have 4 great-grandchildren: Christopher, Avery, Everleigh and Harper. Dad was predeceased by his parents, Neil and Alice, and his sister, Pauline, his twin brothers, Jim and Jerry, and survived by his sister Doreen. Dad was a proud father, and grandfather, often bragging about something one of the kids accomplished. He was quick to praise, and seldom judged anyone...a trait that was him.
Charlie spent most of his life in Peterborough, and he had a special fondness of East City. He had a brief 5-year stint in Fenelon Falls and it was during that time where he met Nell at a dance in Bobcaygeon (rumour has it that he finally muscled-up the courage to ask mom to dance...the very last dance). And as they say, the rest is history.
Charlie’s love of coaching and involvement in various sports kept him in hockey rinks, lacrosse arenas and baseball fields throughout much of his adult life. He was President of the Peterborough Community Church Hockey League in the late sixties, and was a proud long-time Pete’s season’s ticket holder. Dad’s latter years continued with his passion for sports as he followed his Peterborough Petes, the NHL and MLB on his big screen TV. A past time he shared with his boys where they would share scores and analysis after every game, passing hours together without realizing given their shared love for sports and spending quality time together.
In 1972, dad and mom decided to buy a cottage. Dad considered a pool but he says mom was wise to recommend investing in a cottage. Well, safe to say, next to marrying mom, that was the best decision of his life. He loved that place. “Work in the morning, play in the afternoon” was his motto. Of course, playtime often drifted into the night time too. Earlier this month, dad stated he hoped he could get up there one more time, to overlook the lake, and enjoy the recent renovations. Sadly, that didn’t happen, but we will honour him often when we’re up there, as it was, without question, his ‘happy place’.
We will miss dad and grandpa immensely, our hearts are heavy now, but his long life will instill fond memories for the rest of our lives.
We love you dad !
Special thanks to the entire staff at Canterbury Gardens for supporting dad these last few months. Thank you to Dr. Jaimi Heidman, as well as the caring team at Hospice.
A private service will take place for immediate family. In lieu of flowers, a donation to Hospice Peterborough or the charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.
