Peacefully, surrounded by love, at her home on Chemong Lake on May 11, 2024 in her 98th year after a long and very fulfilled life.
Evelyn is predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Walter (2010) with whom she is now united forever in their eternal home.
Much loved mother of Janet (Michael du Manoir), Jim (Donna Murray), Beverley (Tim Wilson), Barbara (Doug Sutherland), and Ronald (Cheryl Gow). She will also be sadly missed by Moira McGinley.
She was a proud grandmother to Kevin (Laura), Stephen (Lauren) and Margot (Michael) du Manoir, Emily (Shua), Matthew - predeceased 2017 and Adam Gow, Jamie (Fran) and Robbie Wilson, Katie, James and David Sutherland, and Rachel (Kyle), Ryan (Ashley), Julia and Jasmin (Alex) Gow.
Evelyn was blessed with ten great-grandchildren - Madeline, Emma, Jeremy, Quinn, Hannah, Kulu, Rory, Owen, Oliver, and Poppy.
She is survived by sister-in-law Therese Watt and brother-in-law Earl Wilkins and numerous nieces and nephews across Canada. Evelyn was predeceased by her sisters Violet, Lillian, and Olive, and brothers Colvin and Melvin.
Led by the dedication and selfless commitment of Barbara, we were fortunate to be able to provide Mom the support she needed to allow her to remain in the home she loved, enjoying the ever-changing lake and stunning sunsets. For this we will be forever grateful.
Evelyn will also be fondly remembered by Judy Edwards, Lynne Charbonneau, Cheryl Nelson, Kyla Mansour and Nathalie Mavra whose love, devotion and care allowed her to continue to live her final years in comfort and with dignity.
Thank you to Dr. Laura MacMillan-Jones, Dr. Evan Brien, Dr. Peggy Dickie and Christina and her nursing colleagues from St. Elizabeth Health.
The daughter of James and Susan Watt, Evelyn was born and raised on Covey Hill, Québec. She earned her Registered Nurse status at Montreal General Hospital and during her time there she met the love of her life, Walter, who was a medical student at McGill University. They married in 1949 and settled in Peterborough several years later.
Evelyn never wavered in her devotion and support for Walter, her children, grandchildren and her church. She and Walter were very committed, faithful and active members of the congregation of Murray Street Baptist Church. Evelyn’s involvement extended wider in the Baptist Church as she served as the moderator of the Trent Valley Baptist Association in 1985.
Evelyn was a down to earth and very wise, busy mother but her indulgent nature came to the fore when she became a grandmother. No grandchild ever said goodbye to her without receiving a handful of Smarties for their trip home.
She was the consummate hostess. Once their children began to leave home and they had spare bedrooms, Evelyn and Walter were always very generous in opening their home to many, whether it be for one night, one year or even longer!Even in her declining years, Evelyn was always concerned about ensuring visitorshad a meal and a place to sleep.
Family and friends will gather for a memorial to celebrate Evelyn’s life on July 25, 2024 at 2:00 pm at Murray Street Baptist Church, 175 Murray Street, Peterborough.
If you so wish, donations to Peterborough Hospice or Murray Street Baptist Church would be appreciated by the family. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.comstockkaye.com for the Gow family.
