He was preceded in death by his wife Bea Turner. He is survived by two children, Heidi (Jim) Keller of Carlisle, PA; Stephen (Beth) Turner of Ooltewah, TN; 7 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
His legacy of love for Jesus and others continues.
Ed was born to Harold Turner and Gwendolyn Turner on August 1, 1931 in Rochester, NY. After graduating from Spencerport High School, Ed worked for a local bank before joining the US Army. He graduated from basic training and proudly served our nation in the Finance Dept at Fort Breckinridge, Kentucky.
Shortly thereafter, Ed took a position in the Accounting Department at Nyack College, where he soon met his bride, Beatrice E. Garsoe, of Portland, Maine. Bea served as a Librarian at the college and they were married on August 11th, 1956.
Ed and Bea were well known on the Nyack College campus and served in several different roles over the years, assisting students and faculty and staff. Ed eventually transitioned to being the manager of the College Bookstore and remained in that role until his retirement in 1996. Upon his retirement, the bookstore was named “The Edward G Turner Campus Store” reflecting his dedicated service for over 40 years. Bea served in a variety of roles in the Library, Academic Office, Music Office and Secretary to the President over the years.
Ed was known as a softspoken, humble man who always had a big smile and a kind word. He was statistician for the college Basketball Team and also served as Staff Advisor for the Yearbook for many years.
Ed was a devoted father to Heidi and Steve and later to his 7 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Upon retiring from Nyack College, Ed and Bea moved north to Maine which was Bea’s home state. They remained there until Bea’s death in 2020. They were active in the North Deering Alliance Church and impacted many during their years living in Maine. In 2021, Ed moved to Chapel Pointe Retirement Community in Carlisle, PA and lived in an apartment there until April of 2024 when his health began declining.
He loved the many cherished friendships he built at Chapel Pointe and he was well loved in return. He always looked for ways to bless others and was very active until a short time before his death. Ed was energetic and regularly lifted weights, used the exercise bike and took brisk walks until just weeks before his passing.
The family wishes to thank all those who shared visits, phone calls, prayers, cards, and video memories during Ed’s month long stay in Hospice at Chapel Pointe. Ed was able to share in laughter and much love during his last days as many friends shared various memories of the way Ed had impacted them over his 92 years.
Ed was greatly blessed by the remarkable care he received at Chapel Pointe as well as the caregivers at Homeland Hospice. He counted each day as a blessing and was filled with joy and anticipation to meet Jesus in his heavenly home.
To honor Ed’s wishes, there will not be funeral services. He will be laid to rest in Maine at the convenience of the family.
Jones, Barnes and Rich Funeral Home, Portland, Maine is entrusted to Ed’s final care.
