Floy was born in Abbeville, South Carolina to the late Andrew Jackson and Birdie Ferguson on November 9, 1928. She attended grade school in Abbeville and then moved to Atlanta in the 8th grade attending Fulton High School graduating in 1945 at 16 years old. She began preparing for a career by taking typing, shorthand and bookkeeping. In her senior year of high school she was selected to be a JP Allen Girl. JP Allen was an Atlanta clothing store. It was an honor to be selected. After graduation she began working at few entry level jobs until finally a church member told her about a job at the Southern Baptist Home Mission Board. She interviewed for a job at 17 as a receptionist. That was the beginning of a long and success career with the HMB. She worked from 1947 – 1954 leaving to have her first child, Dale. She stayed at home until Dale and Lisa were both in high school and then she returned to the HMB in 1971, retiring in 1997. She worked for Dr. Paul Adkins as his administrative assistant for 22 years in Christian Social Ministries. She loved her job and made many lifelong friends there including Lee Adams who introduced her to husband. She also had many wonderful experiences including going to Glorietta, New Mexico once a year for a week-long conference and training for missionaries and staff. She organized all the meetings, creating and distributing handouts and took notes. It was a busy week but one filled with inspiring singing and testimonies. Dale traveled with her to chauffer people around during the conference and it became a favorite place for them both. Floy and Dale were always active in church. Together led the college age kids at Gordon Street Baptist Church. Floy was also the president of the WMU for a few years. They also were active in Southwest Christian Church when they moved to College Park. They served in several ways there. On August 30, 1952 Floy married Dale, the love of her life. They had a daughter and son and shared 67 years of blissful marriage. Floy loved to read, bake, and being a mother.
Surviving are her son, Dale and her daughter Lisa and Chuck Vanderwoud.
