Pamela Mary McLean passed away on May 4, 2024. She was born Pamela Mary Stace in Maymyo, Burma, on December 21, 1934, to Charles and Nellie Stace. The family returned to England, where she grew up in Hayes, Middlesex.
She lived in London during The Blitz, and later in life, she would often recall stories of sheltering in tube stations during bombing raids with her “Micky Mouse” gasmask. She enjoyed visiting family in Folkstone, England, where her mother, Nellie, and sister, June, briefly lived after losing her father to the war.
As a young adult, she trained to be a nurse at Hammersmith Hospital and Chiswick Polytechnic. She emigrated to Australia, where she worked as a registered nurse traveling the Outback by motorcycle. At 26, she returned to England aboard S/S QUEEN MARY. During the passage, she met the love of her life, William Donald McLean (Don). In February 1962, they were married in England before traveling the world, working in St John, Canada, New Orleans, and Seattle.
In 1965, they had their first son, Don, and would briefly return to both England and Australia before their love of the Pacific Northwest would see them settle in Seattle. In 1967, they were blessed with a second son, Frank, and the family lived in Kirkland for several years before moving to Bothell in 1974. They were actively involved in youth soccer, a significant focus of the boys throughout their childhood. Pam worked as a research nurse at the University of Washington. The family regularly attended church services at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church in Bothell.
Pam lost her husband in 1987 and never remarried. After retiring from the UW, she volunteered at the Northshore Senior Center. She enjoyed camping and spending time with her four adored grandchildren.
She remained actively involved with her family, her church, the senior center and Daughters of British Empire until she was taken from us. Pam will be remembered as a kind and generous person who was loved by both her family and community. She is survived by her sons, Don (and his wife Angela) and Frank (and his wife Liz), and her grandchildren, Ethan, Eilish, Callum and Isabelle.
Services will be held at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, 19540 104th Avenue Northeast, Bothell, Washington at 2:00 p.m. on May 18.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Northshore Senior Center or the charity of your choice.
