Born on Dec. 11, 1931, in the Inwood section of Manhattan, New York City, she was the youngest of two daughters of Samuel and Margaret (nee Soden) Goodemoot. She attended Good Shepherd School in Inwood and Academy of the Sacred Heart of Mary in Park Terrace.
After graduation from secretarial school she married John Lenane in 1951 and had two daughters. Soon after, she began a long career as an executive assistant in a variety of industries, including fashion, construction and home health care.
In 1963 Joan married Robert Fuxjager and, in 1977, they relocated to Kingston, N.Y. She enjoyed cooking and attending courses with her husband at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y.
Shortly after Robert’s death in 1992, she moved to Provincetown fulltime to join her daughter Joan. Upon arrival in Provincetown she started her years of volunteer work at the Center for Coastal Studies and Provincetown Council on Aging, also serving for several years on the board of directors of the Friends of the Provincetown Council on Aging. She enjoyed attending luncheons and other activities at the COA, including playing scrabble and bridge. Joan was an animal lover and especially enjoyed Coastal Studies’ whale watches and relished the company over the years of her canine and feline friends.
For a number of years, Joan spent winters in Stuart and Boynton Beach, Fla., where she volunteered at the Boynton Beach Senior Center. She moved back fulltime to Provincetown in 2019 to spend more time with her daughter.
Joan is survived by her two daughters, Dorothy Lenane of Kingston, N.Y., and Joan A. Lenane of Provincetown, as well as her daughter-in-law, Sally Rose, good friends Robert Henneberry and Larry Moodry, and her ever-vigilant canine companion, Tucker. In addition to her husband, Robert, Joan was also predeceased by her sister, Eileen Seeley.
She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 8, at St. Peter the Apostle Church in Provincetown. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Friends of the Provincetown Council on Aging, 2 Mayflower St., Provincetown, MA 02657.
