Manta, Joseph, 90, of North Truro, passed away at Cape Cod Hospital after a brief illness on May 11, 2024. Joe was the loving son of Charles E. Manta and Vivian D. (Alexander) Silva. Joe graduated from Provincetown High School and went on to proudly serve in the Air Force and was stationed during the Korean War in Alaska, and later at Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, VA where he was involved in cryptography, and where he was set up on a blind date and met his future wife, E. Carol (Hall). After Joe was discharged from the military in 1956 he became a Credit Manager for Shaw Jewelry Store in Newport News, VA. Joe and Carol moved from Hampton, VA to Provincetown where they enjoyed the quaint seaside town, built a life, career, and family. After landing in Provincetown, Joe and Carol built a home in North Truro where they have adored for over 50 years. Joe became a successful Banker at First National Bank which eventually became Shawmut Bank and enjoyed his career and clients for 60 years.
After retirement, Joe kept busy by taking a job as a school bus driver. He loved interacting with the children, taking on their energy and enthusiasm helped him stay young at heart. He also worked at the Mid Cape Home Center in Wellfleet for many years. It wasn’t all work with Joe, he was a very talented sailor. He loved taking on the challenges of the wind and waves, he won trophies for his abilities on the water. Joe also enjoyed a peaceful day on the links or sitting in his comfy chair rooting for the Red Sox, Celtics, and Patriots. Joe was also a member of the Provincetown Lion’s Club.
He will be remembered by his gentle nature, his way of speaking kindly of others, his warm smile and his generosity.
Joe is survived by his wife of 65 years, E. Carol Manta and his daughter Kimberly Manta both of North Truro, he is also survived by his sister, Nancy McDermitt, his grandson Eben Higgins and his wife Jennifer, his great-grandson Mason, his brother in law Chris Hatley, and his good friends he had coffee and pastries with in the WRAC Line Club every Tuesday. In addition to his parents, Joe is preceded in death by his step-father John Silva, his sister Beverly Prill, and his son, Mark Manta.
Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in Joe’s memory may be made to the American Heart Association.
