Alice Calvin McBride, 71, of Walkertown passed away on the afternoon of May 10, 2024 at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist surrounded by those who loved her. Alice was born May 18, 1952 in Youngstown, Ohio to the late John Paul Calvin and Eleanor Bosley Calvin.
Alice grew up in Boardman, Ohio where she attended Bethel Lutheran Church and graduated from Boardman High School in 1970. While at BHS it was her joy to play the flute in the marching band. Many of her favorite stories from that time began with “This one time at band camp…” Alice’s love of music continued throughout her life.
Alice had a lifelong love of learning. She attended UNC-G as an adult. During her time at UNC-G she embarked on her greatest adventure when she spent a year studying abroad in Guadalajara, Mexico. While there she traveled extensively and enjoyed the food, culture and learning to speak Spanish. When she returned she graduated Summa Cum Laude with a B.S. in International Studies and a minor in Spanish. She was a member of Beta Gamma Sigma honor society and was awarded a Medal of Academic Excellence.
Alice devoted many years to being a stay at home Mother to her children. During her early career, prior to attending college, Alice spent 9 years working for the Winston-Salem Journal in Advertising Sales and as an Editorial Assistant. She volunteered with the Irish Children’s Summer program to bring Protestant and Catholic children from Belfast, Northern Ireland together to foster peace through understanding. After she earned her degree she completed student internships with Overseas Private Investment Corp. in Washington D.C. and with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Greensboro. She briefly worked as an Associate Buyer with Takata Restraint Systems. Alice worked the final 11 years of her career as a Purchasing Agent for BB and T Bank until she retired in 2013.
Alice lived in Walkertown for the last 40 years where she was a member of Morris Chapel United Methodist Church and was an active member of her Sunday School Class until her health challenges would not allow her to attend. She was a great cook who enjoyed preparing a wide variety of meals for her family. Her legacy will live on through the many recipes she cherished. She loved to travel locally and internationally and particularly enjoyed visiting museums. She loved the many pets she had throughout her life. She was an unbeatable Scrabble player, a fantastic conversationalist and perhaps most importantly a die-hard fan of the Cleveland Browns. The last years of her life presented immense physical challenges however her mind stayed sharp, her spirit stayed positive and her faith in God endured. Her strength was an inspiration to all who knew her. Alice was loved immensely by those who knew her best and her presence will be deeply missed.
Alice is survived by her daughter, Kelly and son-in-law Paul Banner of Concord, NC who cared for her tirelessly and selflessly in the final years of her life; son Patrick McBride of Palm Harbor, Florida; brother John Calvin (Linda) of Salineville, Ohio; niece Tesa Treadway (Steven) of New Braunfels, Texas; caregiver and companion Gayle Key (Shaun) of Winston-Salem; and many life-long friends.
A service to honor her memory will be held at 3pm Friday May 17, 2024 at Morris Chapel United Methodist Church in Walkertown, NC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you consider a donation in memory of Alice to Morris Chapel United Methodist Church or the Forsyth Humane Society.
