Adopted in 1949 by her parents, Howard and Joyce Witwer, Gail grew up in a Royal Canadian Air Force family. Moving frequently throughout her childhood due to her father's military career, she lived in every Canadian province by the time she finished high school, making lifelong friends along the way.
With her principled military upbringing, Gail was wonderfully straightforward and no-nonsense, yet possessed a deeply generous spirit, full of grace and a playful sense of humour, all grounded by grit and intelligence. Respect and decency were values she not only spoke of often, but actively embodied every day.
In the face of one of life's greatest challenges, Gail's compassion only deepened when she suffered the loss of her cherished 15-year-old daughter Kathryn (Kathy) in the 1990s - she chose to help others. Channeling her grief into purpose, she drew on her early experience as a Bible study leader to run an ongoing support group and to bring mental health awareness to the community for many years, later transitioning to supporting secular humanitarian charities. Together, these experiences deeply shaped her character, and left a lasting legacy of generosity and service that will continue to touch the lives of many for years to come.
Later in life, after decades of searching, Gail experienced the indescribable joy of finding and connecting with her remaining birth family, forging precious relationships with her sister Sandra, and her cousin Gina.
Gail leaves behind many cherished memories for her friends, family, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. Though words can't fully capture the depth of her life, her legacy and generosity of spirit remains.
Gail was predeceased by her daughter, Kathryn, her parents, Howard and Joyce, and her husband, William (Bill). From her birth family, she is survived by her sister, Sandra, her cousin, Gina, and their families. She is also survived by her step-children, Rachel and Scott, and their families, many cousins from the Witwer and McCoy sides of the family, and her dear friend, Sok Heng and her family.
A Celebration of Life is being planned for September. Details will be announced at a later date.
