It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, husband, and grandfather. Tom is survived by his wife Maureen, sons Graham (Fiona Narod), Ted (Erika), stepson David Brawner (Lana), and stepdaughter Andrea Neild (Matt), grandchildren Duncan (Emma), Alasdair (Petra), Carolyn, Wes, Daniela, Michael, Anthony, and first wife Marilyn Simms. He was predeceased by his sister Carol Simms.
Tom was born and raised in Courtenay on Vancouver Island. He attended UBC, graduating in 1957 with a degree in Commerce. He married, had two sons, and went to work in the oil-patch. Working with B/A, Gulf and Petro Canada he moved from Vancouver, to Halifax, Toronto, Calgary, Toronto and finally back to Calgary, where he retired at age 57. After retirement, he moved to Vancouver where he married Maureen in 1992 and happily welcomed a stepson and stepdaughter to the family.
Tom approached retirement the way he approached his career; fully committed, always moving, and not slowing down! Tom and Maureen enjoyed travelling extensively, particularly enjoying trips/cruises to Egypt, Japan, India, Panama, and visits to Hawaii every winter. He made regular hunting trips to Alberta, fishing trips in BC, and as much golf and skiing as he could fit in to the seasons. He was also an active participant/volunteer in the St. Mary’s Kerrisdale community.
Family was the most important thing to (Grandpa) Tom; he attended endless soccer games, hockey games, dance recitals, band concerts, and gymnastics meets as his grandchildren grew. Family dinners and gatherings were held regularly; every occasion was celebrated.
He will be remembered as a kind and caring gentleman, who always put everyone else first.
A memorial will be held on Saturday, February 4th, 2:00pm at the Arbutus Club (2001 Nanton Avenue, Vancouver).
