July 16, 1975 - October 24, 2014
Blessed is the man who
walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,
nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits
in the seat of the scornful; but his delight
is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he
meditates day and night. He shall be like
a tree planted by the rivers of water that
brings forth its fruit in its season, whose
leaf also shall not wither; and whatever
he does shall prosper.
Psalm 1:1-3

Biography
Ek Cayabyab went home to be with the Lord on October 24, 2014 in San Diego, California at the age of 39 years old. A memorial service honoring his life will be held at Word of Life Worship Center in La Mesa, CA on Monday November 3rd, 2014 from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Viewing hours will be held on Monday at 5:00 p.m. and again at 8:00 p.m.
Ek was born to Evangeline and Primitivo Cayabyab on July 16, 1975 in Bataan, Philippines. Ek and his family lived in Bataan until 1980 when his father transferred the family to San Diego to serve in the U.S. Navy.
On May 8, 1999, Ek married the love of his life, Bea Galang in San Diego. Ek and Bea met in 1991 at the age of 15 and were inseparable from the start. They were known to finish each other’s thoughts and sentences, and shared a deep and passionate love. They were blessed with 5 beautiful children; Alexandra, Alexander, Aleeyah, Alyssa, Aalahni and one beautiful granddaughter, Brisais. Ek was especially loved and cherished by his family for his devotion to the Lord Jesus and for his ability to demonstrate gratefulness in all things while living with daily joy and laughter. He loved to make Bea and the children laugh. He told jokes all the time with “high-fives” after his graduating punch line. He just had a way of knowing how to make everyone laugh. Ek spent so much of his time pitching a tent at the beach and inviting friends and family to enjoy the beauty of the sky and ocean. Some of his favorite memories happened at Mammoth Lakes; hiking, fishing, and camping with his family. Ek never met a stranger and cherished spending time with those he loved.
Ek was passionate about serving in the ministry. He gave his time to Miracle 139 where he loved blessing special needs children. He also served in ministry at Donavan State Prison with his wife, Bea. He had such a way with the prisoners, known as the “brothers in blue”. The brothers in blue were captivated and inspired by his quiet strength and courage. They knew they could count on Ek to share, teach, and pray with them. Ek was able to reach these men because he had lived a life in their shoes years earlier when he served time prior to incarceration in 1999. This time in solitude provoked Ek to cry out to God and he subsequently gave his life to Christ that year. After serving time and growing in the Lord, Ek knew prison ministry was his calling. He knew he had to tell the story of a God who became man and freely suffered and died so that he could live. He knew that he must spread the good news of the gospel for those who would receive it. He knew he was called to set the captives free.
Ek is survived by: his wife Bea Cayabyab, daughters Alexadra Streeter, Aleeyah Cayabyab, Alyssa Cayabyab, Aalahni Cayabyab, son Alexander Quezon, granddaughter, Brisais Carter, sisters Penelope Nogra and Melissa Calcetas, brother Noel Cayabyab and parents Evangeline and Primitivo Cayabyab.
Rather than mourn his death, Ek’s wish was for his family and friends to rejoice in the life he shared with each of you and especially for his victory in realizing an eternal life with his creator, Jesus Christ. Nothing would honor Ek more than for those who are touched by his story to fully surrender to the love of God, for many are called but few are chosen. Matt 22:14
Please join us as we honor and celebrate the beautiful life of Ek Cayabyab.
