Janice was born August 11, 1925 in Memphis, Tennessee, the only child of Pauline and Harry Abraham. As a youngster, Janice had a great love of music. She sang in the Memphis Open Air Chorus several summers and with the WMC Radio Chorus.
She grew up and attended college at Louisiana State University. It was there, in 1943, that she met the love of her life, Jack Levine. He must have loved her, too, because they tied the proverbial knot in 1946 and remained married and devoted to one another for 63 years, until his death in 2009.
Janice became very active in B’nai B’rith Women and was President of the Rose Caplovitz chapter. She delivered food to the homebound via Meals on Wheels and provided transportation for the blind and visually impaired.
Janice and Jack were frequently out and about square dancing with friends while making new ones and traveling much of the globe, collecting photos and memorabilia along the way. She was particularly fond of magnets which served as small reminders of the fabulous and interesting places they visited.
Janice and Jack expanded their family, first with Harry in 1954, and with a repeat performance welcoming Barbara Jo into the family in 1956. Janice wrote that “Harry and Barbara Jo were the greatest events of her life.” Spoken like a true mother! And Janice was thrilled when Harry married and presented her with a “second” daughter, Kim.
Her family, travel, volunteer work and those frequent Mahjong games kept Janice busy. The Monday Mahjong clan became their own kind of family unit, spanning 50 years of fun, friendship and support.
Janice is survived by her son Harry and his wife Kim, by her daughter Barbara Jo, and a great many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
