Raquel “Rachel” Alfaro Monroy, age 86, entered her eternal resting place in heaven on April 27, 2024 in Mesquite, Tx. She was born on February 27, 1938 in Edinburg, TX and graduated from Edinburg High School in 1958 where she excelled in academics and sang in the choir. She married her high school sweetheart, Jose Sanchez Monroy on July 5, 1959 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Edinburg, Tx and had six children.
She moved to Dallas, TX then settled in Mesquite, TX in 1964. Rachel and family attended St. Pius X Catholic Church, Dallas,TX. She actively served in the parish with the Ladies Society and Eucharistic Ministry. She served in her community volunteering with county elections including serving as county chair. She had a love of gardening,music, playing piano, and for the arts which she passed to her children. Her joy for learning and higher education was modeled by going back to school after she raised her children and receiving her undergraduate degrees in Arts and Sciences from Dallas County Community College, Eastfield College and a Bachelor of Social Work at the University of Texas at Arlington. She continued to serve her community by working with Dallas Independent School District in the ESL program. She enjoyed domestic and international travel with her husband, Joe.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Jose Sanchez Monroy, parents, Atanacio Alfaro and Evarista Quiroz Alfaro, sister, Epifania Garcia, sister, Josefina Garza, son-in-law, Christian D. Leicht, and grandson, Taylor Joseph Leicht.
She is survived by her sister, Consuelo Robledo, brother Ruben Alfaro, children, Margaret Leicht, Deborah Martinez, Sandra Colvin, Audrey Medrano, Joseph Monroy, Mark Monroy, eight grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
