Barbara Everett, PhD, a trailblazer in mental health advocacy, passed away on April 23, 2024, at the age of 74 in Hamilton, Ontario. Born on August 2, 1949, in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, Barbara dedicated her life to destigmatizing mental illness and improving access to mental health services.
A published author, Barbara was renowned for translating complex ideas into accessible language. Her books, including "A Fragile Revolution: Consumers and Psychiatric Survivors Confront the Power of the Mental Health System" (2000), received widespread acclaim. As a sought-after speaker, she shared her mental health and addiction advocacy expertise at conferences and events. Barbara worked in various professional capacities within hospital and community mental health services, from social worker to CEO of the Canadian Mental Health Association, Ontario Division, between 2000 and 2004. During this time, she was pivotal in advancing awareness of mental health issues and the accessibility of services.
Beyond her professional achievements, Barbara cherished the winters spent with dear friends in Green Valley, Arizona, where she found solace in painting, good food, and fine wine. She embraced life's simple pleasures and is remembered by those closest to her for her sharp wit and vibrant spirit.
Her unwavering dedication left a lasting legacy in the lives of countless individuals she touched through her profound impact on mental health advocacy.
Barbara is survived by her son Matthew (Amy), grandchildren Noah and Lila, brother John Leader and his family, the Roberts family, and many lifelong friends. Contributions to Barb's memory may be made to the Canadian Mental Health Association.
