Lan Mac Luong of Houston, Texas passed away on April 23, 2024, at the age of 73. Born in Hanoi, Vietnam on July 20, 1950 to Hien Ngoc Tran (father) and Huyen Thi Tran (mother), Lan graduated from a renowned Vietnamese French private school and spoke Vietnamese, French and English. Lan loved music and dancing and spending time with her family and friends. She was also a wonderful cook who preserved her family’s recipes and food traditions.
In the midst of the Vietnam War, Lan married Huy Luong, and they had 2 children—Amber Luong and Jason Luong. Lan and her family escaped Vietnam the day before the fall of Saigon and were rescued by the U.S. Navy’s Seventh Fleet and brought to the United States. Lan’s first job was working in the cafeteria at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Lan and her family later moved to Houston when her husband accepted a job as an accountant with the City of Houston. Lan later took a job in human resources with the Houston Police Department, where she worked for over 23 years. Her long service to the Houston Police Department was recognized with an official Proclamation naming April 28, 2017, as Lan Mac Luong Day in the City of Houston. Lan put 2 children through college, law school, medical school, and graduate school. She was devoted in her faith and was a longtime member of the St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church. Lan lived life to the fullest and was always surrounded by friends, family, dancing and singing, and good food. In her retirement, Lan loved to travel the world with her husband, children, and grandchildren.
Lan is survived by her two children—Dr. Amber Luong (Professor and Vice Chair for Academic Affairs within the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at the McGovern Medical School at the University of Texas Health Science Center Houston) and the Honorable Jason Luong (former Judge of the 185th District Court of Harris County, Texas and the first Vietnamese American elected district court judge in Harris County, Texas). Lan had 6 grandchildren—Lucas Ray, Hayden Ray, Caily Ray, Sofia Castillo-Luong, Daniel Luong, and Marissa Luong—who were the light of her life.
