He was predeceased by his wife Ingrid, brothers Peter and Fritzerl, and parents Emma and Leonhard.
Herb is survived by his son Robert (Meredith), grandson Kaslo, Daughter Barbara (Kevin), granddaughter Charlie; sisters, Roswitha, Emmi, Christl, and brother Leonhard along with nieces and nephews.
Herb was born on December 20, 1939, in Murau, Austria. He immigrated to Canada from Austria with his good friend Werner Rumpold on October 21, 1966, and they built their lives in Canada.
A memory Herb spoke of often when arriving in Canada, was when they first went to A & W and saw Rootbeer on the menu thinking they would get to experience a real Canadian beer-were they ever in for a surprise.
Prior to immigrating to Canada, Herb completed his chef apprenticeship in Styria, Austria. From there he worked at several places, including the Post Hotel in Lech, Hotel Tirol in Tyrol and the Hotel Iglerhof, in Innsbruck, Austria.
Herb’s cooking career expanded over 30 years at the Capri Hotel, as Sous Chef and Executive Chef. Herb’s cousin Chef Helge, was instrumental in inspiring him to come to Canada and getting his first job at Capri Hotel-where they worked together for over 26 years. After “retiring” from the Capri, Herb continued working as the Chef at the Sunset Ranch golf course for several years; followed by cooking for the residents at Wedgewood Retirement Home for nine years, before “officially retiring” at 75 years old.
Herb had an enormous love for the Canadian Rockies. Many years of our childhood he would take us camping to Banff, and fishing at Lake Minnewanka- memories his family now will never forget.
Herb loved riding his bike while enjoying Kelowna’s natural beauty and a pint of beer at his favorite pubs. When at home, he also loved spoiling his friends and family with his passion of cooking. He was also an avid tennis player and would play rain-snow-or-shine at the recreation centre.
Herb had a very kind gentle soul and was the best Dad we could ever ask for.
His family would like to thank the staff at Three Links Manor and Dr. Obedkoff for the kindness and wonderful care for our father. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
