William was born on June 7, 1942, in Horse Cave, Kentucky, to William Dillon Woodson Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Wilson Woodson. He was the third youngest of nine children. William resided in Glasgow, Kentucky, until his graduation from high school in 1960. Soon after, he joined the United States Navy and was stationed in Pensacola, Florida. William remained in Pensacola for the duration of his naval career and went to work for the Naval Aviation Rework Facility after being discharged. He worked there for three decades until his retirement, finishing apprentice school at the top of his class. He then worked for Marianna Airmotive for a number of years until he retired. William was an avid tennis player, fisherman, and reader of mystery and Western novels.
To his Kentucky family and friends, he was known as Billy, but in Florida he was called Woody. He decided to remain in Pensacola, where he married Linda Lavon Jarrell, and the couple had two sons: Stephen Ashley Woodson and Jared Paul Woodson.
William passed away at his Pensacola residence on May 15, 2024. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Arthur (Mae), David, Urie (Nancy), and Ralph; and sisters Jane Hoyt (Bill) and Mary Rapier (Jim). He is survived by his brother George (Rita); sister Sarah Luttrell (Bill); sisters-in-law Gladys and Alma; wife Linda of 58 years; sons Stephen Ashley (Dana) and Jared Paul; grandsons Stephen Matthew, Nicholas Ryan, and Jared Dillon; and granddaughter Lilliana Nicole.
William’s viewing will be held from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm on Thursday, May 23, 2024 followed by a Funeral Service at 1:00 pm. Burial to follow at 2:00 pm. The viewing and service will be held at Eastern Gate Funeral Home, and the burial at Pensacola Memorial Gardens on Pine Forest Road near Five Flags Speedway, where William enjoyed watching races with his family.
