Arlene McTigue, 74, of San Rafael, died Wednesday, March 19, at Marin General Hospital from congestive heart failure. Arlene Oksanen was born in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, on September 1, 1939, to Arne and Laina Oksanen. She attended schools in Fitchburg and graduated from Fitchburg State University in 1961 with a Bachelor's degree in nursing.
Arlene moved to San Francisco in 1963 and married D. Patrick (Pat) McTigue in 1965. Pat and Arlene moved to San Rafael in 1970.
Arlene's nursing career spanned over thirty years. She was on staff at Franklin Hospital and Children's Hospital, where she was a critical care nurse and later a home health care nurse. She also worked for General Electric in their long-term care division.
She was an active volunteer for organizations including Guide Dogs for the Blind, and Friends of the Library. She was an avid reader, gardener, and swimmer and taught countless young people how to refine their swimming skills. Travel was another much-loved pastime for Arlene; she and Pat traveled often and especially enjoyed cruises.
Arlene is survived by her husband, Pat McTigue, and her sister, Marcia Hotaling. Other survivors include sister-in law Kathryn McTigue, brothers-in law Clem Milder and John Murray, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Arlene will be missed not only by Pat but also by everyone who loved and benefited from her warmth as a hostess, her smile and infectious laugh, and her great generosity and friendship. At her request, there will be no public service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favorite charity.
Arrangements under the direction of Keaton's Mortuary, San Rafael, CA.
